Sailing in the British Virgin Islands is one of my favorite Travel Therapy options and there’s big news about next month’s huge annual sailing regatta. This is the 37th year for the famed BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival. I was there in 2006 and it was amazing and this year promises to continue to impress with more than 160 boats from 14 to 75 feet signed up for the March 31st to April 6th competition.

What’s different this year is one of the Gold Sponsors selected for this event is a new luxury resort that’s set to open this October, The Scrub Island Resort, the BVI’s first new resort in 15 years! If you follow this blog you’ve already seen a sneak peek at this fantastic property and managers say this was a great opportunity for the resort to get involved in one of the largest events in the Caribbean.

The regatta is actually two events. The first is a casual three-day warm up where you have boats racing from Tortola to the Bitter End Yacht Club on Virgin Gorda and then back to Tortola. The more competitive race follows where you’ll have three days of serious racing action from some of the top-tier sailors in the world.

I saw the tail end of the race in 2006 from the Catamaran we had chartered on our mission to sail seven islands in seven days.

The BVI  is truly one of the most beautiful sailing destinations in the world and now with a new resort to check out I’ll be headed back this fall to see what the Scrub Island Resort has to offer. Stay tuned!

For more about the BVI and the Scrub Island Resort check out other posts on this TRAVEL THERAPY blog under “Caribbean”.
