I love this picture! This little turtle looks pretty happy and why not he’s living large in one of the most beautiful turtle sanctuaries in the world in Bora Bora. This is one amazing TRAVEL THERAPY destination you don’t want to miss!

Le Méridien Bora Bora has 81 over-the-water bungalows featuring fantastic glass floors where you can actually see turtles like the one pictured swimming by. It’s phenomenal!

Besides offering an incredible island escape and an award winning honeymoon haven the resort is working with the Ministry and Delegation of the Environment to help protect the hawksbill, leatherback and green sea turtles.

Right in the middle of the resort’s private lagoon a special turtle sanctuary has been set up to help protect some of the South Pacific’s most vulnerable creatures. At the same time work is under way to educate the local community about why preserving this marine life is so important.

An added bonus is guests staying at the property are allowed the opportunity to swim with the turtles. You have to love that!

School children in the community are able to “adopt a turtle” and come to the sanctuary and learn more about these special creatures. There’s also a way guests can volunteer so the opportunities to help are endless! The sanctuary also has a coral garden with more than 100 tropical fish.

The folks who run the sanctuary say one of the biggest challenges is changing the perception about the turtles and teaching people why they need to be protected instead of ending up on a dinner plate. That’s right, for decades locals have feasted on these turtles because their meat is said to taste like beef. Now the goal is to keep the poachers and turtle hunters far away from these turtles so they don’t disappear but are around for future generations to appreciate.
