It’s always great to see a successful resort “Pay it Forward” by giving back to the community and its staff and that’s exactly what the award-winning Curtain Bluff Resort is doing in the Caribbean.

Curtain Bluff, an upscale all-inclusive property on Antigua, is constantly ranked at the top of the list as one of the best places to stay in the Caribbean. The first time I visited Curtain Bluff was in December when I was combining a work trip with a mini-birthday vacation.

I had heard so much about this Caribbean gem I was excited for the assignment, but often as I find with my trips what impressed me the most about Curtain Bluff wasn’t what I expected.

Within hours of checking in I was sitting by the beach sipping a signature concoction when the owner of the property Howard Hulford strolled up to me. After a lively conversation, I learned how much Hulford loved not only Curtain Bluff, a resort he started more than 45 years ago, but the island of Antigua so he had come up with a unique way to give back.

For Hulford, a former World War II pilot, Curtain Bluff is much more than just a business it’s his home and the resort staff is his extended family. That’s why Hulford and his wife Michelle started the resort’s Old Road Fund more than 25 years ago.

“We wanted to give back to the local community because everyone has given us so much,” Hulford said.

So now when you visit Curtain Bluff you can make a tax-free donation to the fund which helps hundreds of Antiguan children study abroad, receive computers and medical assistance and attend tennis camps in the U.S. The donations also help repair homes on the island that are damaged by storms. Since the fund was started more than eight million has been raised which just goes to show you how with a very small gesture you really can make a huge difference!
