It’s no secret I’m always looking for that hidden gem of a travel destination for my Travel Therapy TV segments, places that are truly unique and authentic, so I was excited at a recent North Carolina tourism event to find  several great places to add to my travel list including Johnston County, North Carolina.

Besides the fact that I learned this North Carolina county is known for its Broadslab Moonshine I was most mesmerized by some incredible pottery on display from local artist Frank Grubbs. Check it out.

Now look closer because what makes this pottery even cooler is how the black marks are made. I tried guessing but didn’t even come close.

The black marks in this pottery are made with horse hair! That’s right real live horse hair from the tail of a horse. Now how about THAT for unique and authentic.

I’m told the way it works is the pottery is taken from the kiln and at the just the right temperature the horse hair is carefully put on…if the pottery is too hot it disappears, too cold the horse hair falls off. Tricky! So now I’m convinced I have to go and visit Frank’s Smithfield’s workshop and see this process in person and of course find some more beautiful pieces to add to my new collection while toasting this art adventure in in Johnston County, North Carolina, with the famous local moonshine.

Stay tuned…
