I just got my confirmation today to stay at Hotel Matilda! I’ve had my eye on this special property ever since it opened late 2010, in magical San Miguel de Allente, Mexico.

If you’re asking, “Where’s San Miguel and hotel what?” then I know I’ve done my job to find a truly unique place to profile for our next ABC TRAVEL SHOW,  that airs nationally and is also featured on www.abcnews.com/travel. I’ve been hosting the show for the last year and also search out special TRAVEL THERAPY destinations that I can travel to, shoot video an photographs and profile here on this website and on national TV on ABC’s Travel Show.

Besides Travel+Leisure rating San Miguel in 2010 as the number one place in Latin America to visit and number four in the WORLD, San Miguel de Allente has a special place in my heart because my grandparents, Walter and Pat Crane, visited in the 1970s. It was their first time to Mexico and they loved this charming Colonial city so much they ended up buying a home in the nearby town of Alamos and living in Mexico for more than two decades!

Not bad for a couple who grew up in Washington State and lived a very frugal life. They didn’t even speak a word of Spanish! My grandparents loved Mexico from the very start and although had a chance to visit them in Alamos several times, I have never, until now, had the opportunity to go to the town that first enticed them, San Miguel de Allente.

I can’t wait to walk in their footsteps on the 400 year old plus cobbledstoned streets and visit some old favorite churches and to experience a new addition to artsy San Miguel, Hotel Matilda Spa & Restaurant.

This chic hotel caught my eye because it’s so different from the traditional bed & breakfasts you’ll find in San Miguel. Hotel Matilda calls itself sleek and forward thinking,  respecting the past while still honoring the future with beautiful artwork featured throught the property.

With only 32 rooms the setting is said to be intimate but still lively. I’ve heard the Chef is all kinds of fun, whipping up fabulous cuisine and that the bar at Hotel Matilda  is “the” place to hang out and mingle.

I’m also looking forward to the spa because they use some local ingredients to pamper you and has the city’s only Hamman. Plus, a new spa experience, Spa en Vino, where mineral theramal springs are incorporated into treatments, is just lauching in July 2011, so  I’ll be able to take advantage of that!

Stay tuned for much more, top travel photos from Hotel Matilda and video coming up!
