To start my Travel Therapy fall foliage research I’m staying at the beautiful Breakwater Inn in Kennebunkport, Maine, and here’s what makes it so special…

The Breakwater Inn was built back in the 1850’s and has been welcoming  travelers for more than 150 years. I love that’s right along the Kennebunkport River and it’s so quiet and peaceful.

The Inn has just 38 guest rooms, keeping it small and intimate and my room, number 16, has a fantastic balcony that looks right out over the river and is the perfect spot to watch the sunset. I could easily spend all day here.

Another plus, one of the top restaurants in Kennebunkport, Stripers, is right on the property and right on the Kennebunkport river so the view is spectacular. Your best bet is to start off at the bar where they have some fun season cocktails and then moving into the dining room.

From the service to the view to the cuisine, my dinner at Stripers was phenomenal. From the raw bar I tried the tuna and salmon carpaccio that was as fresh as you’ll find it and the shrimp ceviche was one of my favorites! For an appetizer we tried the Lobster Martini made with watermelon, sweet corn and lime and I could totally see having this with a glass of wine for a lunch.

For an entrée it was a  hard choice because the chef told me that his specialty is the Crispy Pork and Scallops but a local favorite is the pan fried halibut with an arugula lobster sauce. My dinner companion had the halibut so I was able to taste that and it was some of the best halibut I’ve ever had and the arugula lobster sauce was out of this world. I ended up having the swordfish that was bbq rubbed served with fennel savory slaw and red pepper puree. It was delicious. When they brought a trio of deserts for us to taste I thought I had died and gone to heaven.

A blissful first day in the Kennebunks.

Now I’m headed to check out the Breakwater Spa for an 80 minute relaxation massage and then I’m off to explore the area before heading to the Beach House Inn where I’ll stay tonight and dine at the famous White Barn Inn.

Stay tuned!
