I’ve been doing so many ABC News Now Travel Therapy TV segments, talking about all the great deals in the Caribbean and Mexico right now, that it only felt right to do a segment today reminding people this is hurricane season for these destinations and to give some top tips for traveling during hurricane season so you don’t get blown away!

The Atlantic Hurricane Season runs from June 1st to November 30th and while traditionally most hurricane hit between August and October you just never know with mother nature so it  makes sense to be prepared for all 6 months!

The U.S. Department of State’s website has some great tips for traveling during hurricane season. Top on my list include:

Hurricane Traveling Trips

  • Register nearest U.S. Embassy
  • Monitor Nat’l Hurricane Center
  • Have Int’l calling on cell phone
  • Leave itinerary with friend/family

So what about travel insurance? There are so many policies out there it can get mind boggling but here are some simple guidelines to help you decided if want and need travel insurance.

Travel Insurance During Hurricane Season

  • Read the fine print. Make sure hurricanes and natural disasters are covered
  • Pick a policy where you can customize what you want
  • Insurance cost is typically 5-10% of your entire trip
  • Check hotels & airlines for their policy-you may be covered

When it comes to deciding where to go that’s “safe” keep in mind Mother Nature can do whatever she wants, whenever she wants, but statistically speaking the following five Caribbean islands have the best records for not getting hit by hurricanes. Note: they are all in the southern tip of the Caribbean.

Caribbean Islands

(least likely hit by hurricanes)

  • Barbados
  • Greneda
  • Aruba
  • Bonair
  • Curacao
